One day in the future, university lecturers in mathematics will be able to use the Mario games as a basis for advanced calculations. “If you take the number of Mario games for console X, multiply it by the number of spinoffs for console Y and divide this by the proposed number for console Z, what do you have?” (answer : a headache, or possibly a number which doesn’t actually exist).

Yet you can’t blame Nintendo for making use of one of the most instantly recognizable and popular characters in the history of video gaming and the E3 conference of 2009 saw another set of Mario-related games heading our way. The rather elaborately-titled Mario vs. Donkey Kong(TM): Minis March Again! is designed for the handheld Nintendo DS and DSI consoles and is the third in this particular sub-series featuring Mario and his simian nemesis. The main selling point of this game, other than it being a Mario game, is the opportunity to design your own levels. Level design has been around quite a while in gaming now, and has proven popular with players. However, thanks to the wireless capacity of the DS, players can now send the levels they have designed to their friends, making the whole thing very open and flexible, as well as a good way to win or lose friends by making the most insanely difficult levels you can think of.

In common with earlier games in the “minis” series, the player doesn’t control Mario himself, but a miniature version of him (as well as miniature versions of other characters from the series). The end objective is, of course, a showdown with Donkey Kong who has taken Pauline, Nintendo’s all-purpose-damsel-in-distress. Well, he would, wouldn’t he? He probably disapproved of one of your level designs.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again! is currently available from the Nintendo DSi shop
