I’m always searching for the latest gadgets and game accessories. Be they from third party manufacturers or from the system creators themselves. But I have to admit that when I first heard about Nintendo’s Movie Player add on for the Nintendo DS, I was very surprised.

The reason for my surprise was quite simple. You see, I’ve been watching movies on my Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS, well, since their release date, with a really fantastic little accessory called the NDS / GBA Movie player.

After doing some searching on Google, I am equally surprised that more Nintendo DS (or Gameboy Advance) owners have not heard of this truly unexampled accessory for their Nintendo DS. It seems that perhaps with all the hype around the Sony PSP and it’s movie playing capabilities, we’ve all neglected to take a look at the less expensive Nintendo DS as anything other than a handheld game system.

What really made this accessory a must buy for myself, was the fact that in addition to movies, I was also able to listen to my MP3 music on my Nintendo DS too – just like Sony PSP owners can. I won’t go into the debate as to which handheld system is better, or offers more… That’s would negate the real reason for this article, which is simply to show Nintendo DS and Gameboy Advance owners that their fun little handheld game system is capable of playing all types of media files too.

The GBA/NDS Movie Player enables you to use your Nintendo DS, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance SP, or Gameboy Micro to play video and audio files and read e-books from standard Compact Flash cards. And before you think that you’ll only be able to watch movie clips or short films, let me be clear in stating that you can watch an entire full length movie with the Movie Player. You can use your PC and a normal Compact Flash card reader to transfer and convert your media files to the Compact Flash cards. The included software even converts files directly from DVD to the proper movie Player format.

And before you think that it’ll take a rocket scientist to convert their DVD movie to the proper file type – think again! The software is so very easy to use, that it requires you to do nothing more than insert the DVD movie you wish to convert, or the digital file if you have it. While this is not any special format so to speak, as the UMD movie discs are for Sony PSP. You can actually take any DVD movie you own, and convert it with the included software to be played back on your Nintendo DS system. What this means is that you’re not stuck buying multiple versions of the same movie to watch that movie on the go.

One of the most common question that I’m asked is whether or not the movie player can actually store and play back a full length movie from a compact flash card. I can completely understand why this would be confusing. I mean, let’s face it, DVD movies are several GIGABYTES in size, how could these possibly fit on a small 256 Megabyte CF card.

I always answer that question with the very same answer. It can play full length movies just fine. But in case you’re wondering just how that may be possible, let me explain. It has a lot to do with the screen size of the GBA and Nintendo DS. Because the screen is much smaller, the file size of the full length movie can be much smaller too, simply because it does not have to maintain a very high resolution the same way it would if you were to watch that movie on your TV set. In essence, it “down converts” the DVD movie, to make it fit right onto the GBA or Nintendo DS screen, otherwise you would have to scrool left to right and up and down in order to see the whole video.

For those of you wondering just how how big your Compact Flash card has to be to enjoy a full movie, here’s a breakdown of the amount of video you can store on common compact flash card sizes. And I have to remind you to take into consideration that most movies are no more than 95 – 110 minutes long. This will give you a real indication of just how much you can stare on each card.

The following is a list of the amount of storage you can have on various compact flash cards. 960 minutes on a 1GB Compact Flash, 480 minutes on a 512MB Compact Flash, 240 minutes on a 256MB Compact Flash, and 120 minutes on a 128MB Compact Flash. As you can see, even a 128M compact flash card is adequate to store a full length movie.

In order to watch a movie on the GBA Movie Player, you’ll first have to use your PC to convert the DVD movie to the proper file format for the player itself. This can be done quite easily with the included software that comes with the GBA Movie Player itself. And don’t forget. You can do a whole lot more than just watch movies. You can actually listen to MP3 music, read e-books, and even load PDA type software onto the Compact Flash card which will essentially turn your Nintendo DS into a very functional PDA.

Rather than waiting for the Nintendo DS movie player, which will be released sometime next year by Nintendo themselves, I would urge all NDS owners to take a look at the GBA/NDS Movie Player. It’s packed with functions and features, and has a price that simply can’t be beat. Even when adding up the cost of a Nintendo DS and the Movie Player, you’ll find that you’re still at par, or cheaper than most good quality portable DVD players.

And let’s face it, you simply can’t put a portable DVD player in your pocket, or have it play the latest Mario game either.

The Nintendo DS (sometimes abbreviated to DS or NDS) is a dual-screen handheld game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo. It was released in 2004 in Canada, the United States, and Japan. The console features a clamshell design, similar to the Game Boy Advance SP, with two LCD screens inside – with the bottom one being a touchscreen. The Nintendo DS also features a built-in microphone and supports wireless IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) standards, allowing players to interact with each other within short range (10-30 m, depending on conditions) or online with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, which launched later in the console’s lifespan. ((

What is a supercard ?

Basically, it’s a device that plugs into the external port and allows a person to access content from an SD micro-card and, in some cases a CF card. Since you can load one of these flash cards (the same type found in cameras, phones, etc.) with just about anything from a computer this opens the door to all sorts of potential applications for your DS. This could be music, pictures or a bunch of nintendo games.

At this moment there are several different supercard products available, for both the Nintendo DS, lite (NDS) and Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP (GBA).

Now how do you know which one is right for you, at our review site we will show you in detail, where to get this supercard, which one and how to use the software.

Now this opens up endless possibilities does it not ?

First of all we need to know this: “What version NDS do you have?”

This is necessary to know so that you purchase the right equipment for your NDS.

Simply, do the following :

Check the manufacturing date of your DS. Most likely, if you have a DS that is purchased in the summer of 2005 to present, you’ll require the “2nd gen” version of a particular device. If it’s before that, then you’ll need the “1st gen” version of the device.

What is NDS homebrew ?

Anything made homebrew for the NDS will require “authentication” by the NDS. It’s similar to trying to play some custom made application or games in your XBOX and realizing it won’t work without a modchip. Anything not made or authenticated by the manfucturer will normally require “authentication”. This is where all these media carts and PASS ME devices come into play.

What is a PASS ME device and why are there so many of them ?

A passme device is a device that has certain programmed code on it that will allow it to authenticate NDS homebrew. These carts have a variety of names, normally based on their manufacturers… i.e. EZ PASS (ezflash company), SUPER PASS (super card company), PASSCARD (m3 company), etc. All in all, they all do the same thing in the long run, authenticate NDS homebrew. Well, this is where it counts. Older (1st gen) DS will require the 1st gen of the PASSME devices. Each company has a 1st gen pass me device. If you have a 2nd gen NDS or an NDS lite, you will require the 2nd or 3rd gen PASSME device from the appropriate company. How they do it and how advanced they are, varies. These devices are merely authenticators.. they don’t carry any media on them, that is what the media carts are for.. which leads us to our next question…

What is a media cart and what do they do?

Media carts, movie players, etc, all various names for essentially the same concept. You’ll notice a variety of names. Supercard, M3, G6, DS-X, Movie Players, etc. What these carts/adapters do is plug into your GBA slot of your NDS and allow you to .. via either a flash-memory or insertable flash memory (i.e. SD card, CF card, Micro/Mini SD, etc)… play media (movies, music, games, e-books, pictures). Amazing, isn’t it?

What do they do? Like I’ve said, they play media off your flashrom or your insertable memory. It’s a great concept if you think about the wonderful things you can now do with your NDS. You can play your music on it, watch movies, watch pictures, read e-books, and run NDS homebrew (if you have your PASS ME device, remember?)

What to do next ?

The nds game i downloaded from romulation.com won't work?

So i downloaded this game from romulation.com (http://i751.photobucket.com/albums/xx158/xsilverflamesx/untitled.jpg?t=1265967105) strait into my ds (into a mini sd card thingy -ez flash-). usually, the games are shown as an icon (eg. pokemon shows a pokeball) but this game's icon is a paper with a question mark (something like that) and when i click it nothing happens (the game is supposed to start when u click it). the same thing happened when i downloaded another game from romulation in the same way. But when i downloaded a game from another site (xtendmedia i think) then it worked fine (+ it came in a zipped folder).
So should i do something to the files from romulation before i put them in my ds (this is my first time using romulation, and my first time downloading games), or should i just find another site? plz help ppl.

PS: i dont ALWAYS download games from the internet. in fact, this is my first time doing it. i only download them when i absolutely CAN NOT find the real games anywhere (first i search in malls etc.). i advise you ppl to do the same. if u can easily get the game in your region, DONT DOWNLOAD IT! pay for it, the legal way! Think of all the people who worked so hard to make the game! … thanx~
