Explore the mysterious Malgrey Castle in the Vampireville hidden object adventure game. Meet interesting characters with hidden agendas as you try to figure out what’s happening inside the castle that’s driving its visitors insane!

You take on the role of a property appraiser who has been assigned to evaluate the ancient Malgrey Castle for the government, since no heir has claimed the property for 100 years. Unfortunately, the previous appraisers sent there by your boss have gone crazy. Now the job falls to you! Hopefully you will be able to perform your job without going mad, and learn more about the mysterious castle and what’s driving your colleagues insane.

When you arrive at Malgrey Castle, you find that things there are slightly peculiar. The heating hasn’t been turned on in 50 years, paintings are hidden behind curtains and cabinets have been boarded up. Time for you to get right into it and figure out what’s happening in the castle! Along the way, you will meet a colorful cast of characters including a butler who is obsessed with the internet, a goth maid who listens to music all day via her massive headphones, and a crazy groundskeeper who used to be president of the local blood donor’s union…

What gives Vampireville such a strong appeal and unique feel is its amazing storytelling. The story progresses chapter by chapter just as it would in a good mystery novel. And there is full voice-acting for all the dialogues and cutscenes. What’s surprising is that they have even included 3D animations of the characters and got them to act out the scenes! Oh, and the lead character looks suspiciously like Keanu Reeves…

The gameplay in Vampireville is more of a point-and-click adventure game than a traditional hidden object game. In each chapter, there are a few story-driven tasks that you have to accomplish. These are achieved by interacting with the environment and trying to find objects that work together to complete the task. For example, if a pipe needs to be repaired, you would need to find some welding equipment, a propane tank, a hose and some matches in order to get the job done.

There are also a few of the traditional hidden object scenes, though they are story-driven as well. When inspecting the guest room last occupied by your insane colleague, you are tasked to find all his belongings in addition to searching for clues as to what drove him insane. There are some unique hidden object puzzles in Vampireville though. When tasked with finding 3 rats, I was trying to search for rats that are cleverly blended into the background. I didn’t expect the rats to be suddenly appearing from a crack in the wall and scurrying across the floor! It’s not so much click a hidden object, but more like catch a moving object before it disappears!

In most other hidden object games, you are penalized for randomly clicking a scene. The opposite is true in Vampireville. Cupboards can be opened and curtains can be drawn. Random pieces of furniture or clutter can also be moved around to reveal hidden objects. Looking for a photograph? It might have fallen behind that dining chair…

There are plenty of other puzzles in the game as well, ranging from jigsaws to logic and memory puzzles. Fortunately, the developers have added a bit of originality and uniqueness to the puzzles, keeping them fresh and interesting. Rather than looking at two pictures and doing the old spot-the-differences thing, this time you have to look at two different pictures and try to spot the similarities!

Overall, Vampireville is a good hidden object and adventure hybrid game that stands out above the crowd. The effort put into the cutscenes, animation and voice-acting is something you don’t expect from games with this kind of budget (Oh, and the characters’ deadpan humor is hilarious as well). Try Vampireville for a nice mystery adventure where you get to be a hero and investigate ghosts and vampires!

Rating: 4.0/5.0

Dsi Sale

It’s that time of the year when people are looking out for the best deals on whatever they buy. The folks at Nintendo have also realized this and decided to put up the grand Dsi sale ever so that you can get the cheapest Nintendo DSi games. If the initial market reports are to be believed, that the DSi console bundles have sold over 100,000 units in just first two days! There are hardly any other game consoles that can boast of such sales within hours of its launch. If you are a newbie to the gaming world, here is something to increase your level of awareness of what we are talking about – DSi stands for Destination Software Incorporation and they are the world’s top producers of interactive games. They make games for a wide range of game consoles, including the PS2 (Play station 2) and the Nintendo DS.

Before you go to a DSi sale to check out all the games that are on offer, did you know that Nintendo is one of the largest producers of hand-held gaming consoles. This Japanese company has tried out different businesses but became best known for the DSi Console bundles they sold. They are said to be among the most respected and valued business houses today, not just in Japan but also all over the world! The Nintendo Ds has a clam-shell design with two consoles. The lower console has touch-screen functionality. The console also sports a built-in microphone and supports the 802.11 standard for short distance wireless connectivity. This feature allows players to interact with each other over short distances, and it’s no wonder that these games have become so popular.

There are many shops who claim to put up the best DSi sale – however the user now has the option of checking out the various options even from his home using the Internet. A little bit of research would only show that many times it is a lot cheaper to buy a Nintendo DSi console that comes bundled with games. However, if you buy them separately you would end up paying a far higher amount than you would have liked to. But of course, it is entirely up to you to either buy them separately or bundled, depending on your mood, your choice, and your budget. There are games for all people, irrespective of gender or age. The newer consoles are much sleeker and they carry a much wider display panel.

When you are at a DSi sale, it would be a good idea to browse through the various games that are on offer. If you ar
1000
e an online shopper it will be easier for you to do that. You can filter through the top games or just go through the various titles in alphabetical order and see if any of them interest you. If you spend some time to go through the user reviews, you will be able to figure out which games are more popular than the rest and then go ahead and buy it.

An Analysis Of Nintendo (ntdoy)

Copyright 2006 Geoff Gannon

Even before last week’s announcement from Sony (SNE), it seemed nearly certain that company’s dominance in the PlayStation 2 generation of video game consoles would give way to a much more level playing field for the PS3 generation. This time around, Sony faces much stiffer competition from both Microsoft (MSFT) and Nintendo (NTDOY).

While the Nintendo name is most closely associated with a video game platform (the NES), the company’s real focus has always been the games rather than the platform. Herein lies the true distinction between Nintendo and its two larger rivals. Nintendo seeks to make good games. Microsoft and Sony seek to control a distribution channel.

Nintendo is the only company among the three console makers that began life as an entertainment company – and it shows. Microsoft is known for software; Sony is known for hardware; and Nintendo is known for games.

American gamers are well acquainted with the Nintendo brand; but, American investors generally know very little about the company. That’s unfortunate, because despite all the attention given to Sony and Microsoft’s video game operations, Nintendo is the ultimate pure play video game company.

Nintendo is an interesting business to write about from an investor’s perspective for several reasons. The company operates in an exciting industry with excellent long-term prospects. It’s more reasonably priced than many public companies in that industry (although that’s not saying much). It’s a truly unique business (with a unique past), and it has a clear vision of what it is and what it isn’t. Obviously, Nintendo’s tremendous intellectual properties add to its appeal both as a subject of an article and as the object of an investor’s interest.

Nintendo has been a good steward of its intellectual properties. It’s been very careful to protect the image of its most beloved characters. In fact, some would say the company has occasionally been too protective of its strongest franchises.

For instance, between 1994 and 2002 there were no new Metroid games, despite the popularity of that franchise. The benefit of such a strategy is that when Metroid Prime was released in 2002, it received extraordinary reviews and sold over a million unit
1000
s. The downside to this approach is obvious. Nintendo effectively surrendered the revenue (almost certainly more than $100 million) that could have been milked from the franchise throughout the latter half of the 1990s.

Nintendo is one of only a few businesses in this position. It’s a rare and valuable property that can benefit from spending some time “in the vault”. Nintendo has several such properties. For this reason, Nintendo has more in common with companies like Disney (DIS) and Lucasfilm than it does with manufacturers of consumer electronics.

Nintendo is an entertainment company; not an electronics company. Console sales are inextricably intertwined with games sales. Hardware sales account for a large portion of Nintendo’s total sales; however, hardware sales don’t drive a large portion of Nintendo’s total sales. At Nintendo, the games sell the consoles. Of course, the console itself can affect the gameplay experience in its role as a platform. For instance, the console itself is expected to be a differentiating gameplay factor when the Wii launches later this year. Whether it’s a positive or negative factor, we don’t know. But, the Wii itself will certainly help differentiate Nintendo’s games from their competition.

Third party publisher support for the Wii has been the subject of much debate and speculation. Nintendo’s consoles have enjoyed less support from third parties than the competing consoles, because Nintendo has been less willing to work with third parties on their terms.

While many publishers are now interested in releasing titles for the Wii, there is a new and substantial impediment to successful third party titles. Games will have to be designed around the Wii. In the past, it was easier for third parties to offer titles for Nintendo’s consoles, without targeting that console in particular. Now, it will be a lot harder to do that.

A Long, Slow Decline

Nintendo’s position in hardware has been declining for well over a decade now. In fact, the zenith of Nintendo’s fortunes in the console business was the NES itself (launched in 1985). It’s been downhill since then. Nintendo launched the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1991, the Nintendo 64 (N64) in 1996, and the GameCube in 2001.

Here are the worldwide unit sales for these four systems as of March 31st of this year:

NES: 61.9 million

SNES: 49.1 million

N64: 32.9 million

GameCube: 20.9 million

That’s not a pretty trend. To add injury to injury, the number of games sold per console had been steadily declining until the GameCube dramatically reversed that trend.

Here are the number of games sold per console for each of the four systems:

NES: 8.08 games

SNES: 7.72 games

N64: 6.84 games

GameCube: 9.05 games

GameCube

The above GameCube number is especially interesting, because sales of GameCube games in the Americas has been extraordinarily strong considering its modest installed base relative to what previous Nintendo consoles had enjoyed.

The GameCube has performed much better in the U.S. than it has elsewhere. The Americas account for 58.37% of worldwide GameCube unit sales while Japan accounts for merely 19.14% of worldwide sales. In the Americas, the number of games sold per GameCube is approximately 10; while in Japan it is only 7.

While a difference of 10 games per system to 7 games per system may not sound that important, it is a far greater difference in the number of games sold per system between geographic regions than exists with any other current Nintendo platform. As a result, the Americas account for nearly two out of every three games sold for the GameCube.

Nintendo DS

At first, it appears the situation is reversed with the Nintendo DS. Japan accounts for more than 4 out of every 10 sa
1000
les of both DS games and the handheld platform itself. However, at the beginning of this year, the ratio of software to hardware sales was still a bit higher in the Americas than it was in Japan.

Game Boy Advance

Nintendo’s Game Boy sales have always been pretty impressive. The Game Boy Advance, which launched in 2001, has sold more than 75 million units and more than 325 million games. That doesn’t include sales of the various Game Boys of the 20th century (the original launched in 1989) which have sold well over 100 million units and 500 million games.

The Game Boy has helped Nintendo’s financial results, because it has been a much more consistent performer. Taking part in the “console wars” is expensive, time-consuming, and risky. The risks are incurred upfront; the rewards come on the back half of the journey. Having the support of regular revenues derived from the Game Boy certainly doesn’t hurt when you’re involved in such an uncertain undertaking as launching a new console every half decade or so.

Conclusion

Apparently, most Japanese gamers now believe the Nintendo Wii will come out on top in this round of the console wars. That’s a surprising and somewhat disturbing finding. If the Wii really is a revolution in the making, I suppose they’ll be right. But, I still think this is Sony’s race to lose.

What will the price of a PS3 be in December of 2007? Until I know that, I can’t predict anything other than a much tighter race this time around.

What about Nintendo as an investment? The stock isn’t expensive, if you expect it to win the next round of the console wars. Otherwise, it’s difficult to value. There are two big issues: the Wii and handheld gaming.

I’m not convinced there are going to be serious competitive threats to Nintendo’s position in handheld gaming coming from high-tech cell phones that are quickly becoming the Swiss Army Knife of the 21st century. I just don’t think the three great obstacles of clumsy controls, a lack of focus from the manufacturer, and a lack of interest from the user are going to be easy to overcome. Nintendo is in the best position of any company to profit from handheld gaming in the future. They will face competition; but, they will start with the advantage of knowing what their product is (a game machine).

So, if you are comfortable with Nintendo’s position in handheld gaming and you truly believe in both the company and the Wii, it would be a reasonable long-term investment at this price. However, even considering the large amount of cash and securities on the balance sheet relative to Nintendo’s market cap, it isn’t a “value” style purchase based on past performance alone. Buying shares at the current price is a bet on a brighter future.

While I like Nintendo’s prospects at the moment, it’s usually safer to bet against the revolution. So, I’d have to say Nintendo is a very interesting business that’s priced a bit too high to be a very interesting investment.

Handheld consoles are not something that every gamer can appreciate. They are for the classic minded or those who are inclined vintage-wards. Even so, there is a good market for handheld Nintendos, such as DS Lite & DSi XL, hence there is a good market for their games as well. Owing to the lower popularity of handhelds, the question which is on the mind of all handheld owned is which of the coming soon Nintendo DSi games are worth buying? The following is a heads up on good Nintendo DSi games worth buying.

1. Dark Void Zero:

Even though the Nintendo DS’s playing style is different from the likes of PS3 and Xbox 360, there is still some overlapping of fans. Amongst all the coming soon Nintendo DS games, Dark Void Zero is a prequel to the Dark Void series of the other types of consoles. Owing to the stark disparity of the consoles, the developers of this couldn’t very well match the actual series on its own ground. So, they decided to change the rules. This game has been created in the truly classic 2D 8-bit NES-style. Therefore, the game play of this game is purely of the bar sliding and the side shuffling kind. This is the dominant USP of this game. It translates into the fact that this game is purely for people who appreciate the classic aspects of this game. Furthermore, if a person does appreciate classic games and also likes the Dark Void Series, then this is the top game to buy.

2. Dawn Of Heroes:

If it is originality you are looking for, then, of all the coming soon Nintendo DS games, this is the one that should be bought. In fact it can be said that this game will be remembered by its fans for, if nothing else, its humor. This game is a semi parody of sorts and takes on the fantasy genre that is famous in the current day and age. Basically, this game is a Real Time Strategy role playing game. Furthermore, this is primarily a turn based game. The game includes some very quirky moments and dialogues including things such as a voodoo practicing cat, or a floating belt playing a role similar to Sir Gandalf. Unlike the majority of Nintendo DS lite games and even the new Nintendo DSi game pre-orders, with this game both screens of the handheld are vital. While one screen shows the actual action of the game, the other is the player’s interface. In addition, like most role playing games, the player, as he or she progresses with the story, will be controlling more than one or two characters. Subsequently, once the player selects all his or her moves in the bottom screen, the action takes place in the top screen and the turn ends. On the other hand, the game does not allow an exhaustive control to the player in terms of upgrading his or her characters. However, for a gamer who enjoys originality, uniqueness and humor, this game, amongst all the coming soon Nintendo DS games, is a must have.
